HCR 87 and HR61 threatens Hawaii's Honu survival by urging the federal government to remove honu from the threatened species list and actively manage the species (meaning allow taking of the species).
Major fundamental threats to the long-term survival of the green sea turtle still exist globally and in Hawaii including ocean acidification, interactions with fishing gear, the loss of nesting beaches resulting from sea level rise, invasive algae, disease, ingestion of and entanglement with marine debris, and coral bleaching.
In the absence of available fact based certainty of reports that claim honu should be delisted, the precautionary principle must apply, especially when determining the fate of an imperiled species in a warming world.
